Historically, the countryside shows traces of human activity way back 7 000-8 000 years. Ancient remains can still be seen today. There are plenty of mounds from the Bronze-Age in the countryside. The oldest known farm in the north of Sweden, so far, is in Gene just south of Örnsköldsvik. It dates back approx. 2,000 years. The Municipality of Örnsköldsvik was founded in 1842, and the town of Örnsköldsvik in 1894. The name was given in memory of Per Abraham Örnsköld who was the county governor between 1762 and 1769.
